RTMP streams in Media RSS playlists?

2 replies [Last post]

Is it currently possible to ...Is it currently possible to create a playlist using media RSS which can play RTMP streams? And if so how?

The Media RSS specification has <media:embed> section which would allow the addition of information to embed the player with Flashvars. This could be where the streaming information comes from, as having other obvious benefits. Is this something Longtail are looking into?

I've since found that the player does support RTMP streams by using the namespace jwplayer. I still think it would be a good idea to support the media:embed tag as an alternative. Was there a reason that you didn't take this route?

@Naomi - the <media:embed> tag doesn't really describe the content, so much as it provides an RSS reader the info it needs to render a player for the content. Since the JW player is only interested in the content the playlist contains, not the rendering metadata, it ignores <media:embed>.

Besides, each <media:embed> tag must contain an entire standalone player configuration, which defeats the purpose of passing the playlist into the player.

If you're syndicating your playlist to other outlets than just the player, you could certainly use <media:embed> to include a single-item player for each playlist item (which would allow other RSS readers to render the content), but you'll still need to include the other content info, such as <jwplayer:provider>
