"Shall be prohibited from making any...."

4 replies [Last post]

I'm interested in purchasing licenses for my sites, but the whole reason I want to purchase and use JW Player is for it's compatibility with Open Video Ads ( http://code.google.com/p/open-video-ads/ ) which allows pre-, mid- and post-roll ads to be managed through OpenX Ad Server.

But reading the License... it says the following under the "License Grant" heading..

"... Licensee shall be specifically prohibited from making any modification (including, without limitation building any plugin) that (i) enables any type of advertisement to be shown in, on or around (in the form of a skin) the Licensed Programs or (ii) allows interactive functionality with software or other programs that provide advertising serving solutions. Additionally, Licensee shall be prohibited from adding advertisements to a playlist or otherwise displaying any type of advertisement in, on or around (in the form of a skin) the Licensed Program."

Please tell me if I interpret this incorrectly, but basically the License Agreement is telling me I can't use the Open Video Ads Support with JW Player which allows me to serve ads within JW Player via OpenX.

I don't get it, because even OpenX has talked about how you can serve ads with their new video ads plugin in the Official OpenX blog:

http://blog.openx.org/11/announcing-the-openx-video-plugin/

Also, please look at:

http://code.google.com/p/open-video-ads/
.. which has extensive usage examples of JW Player, of which I am trying to replicate on my websites.

So please let me know if I am allowed to serve ads in my licensed JW Players and if I can use Open Video Ads & the OpenX Video Ads Plugin to serve such ads in JW Player.

Thank you for any clarification or elaboration.

Kind Regards,

Deke.

I'd like an answer to this one also.

Apologize on the confusion around this – totally get your points.

We are currently working w/ the creators of the Open Video Ads project and will be announcing something pretty exciting in the coming weeks that will speak more clearly about our relationship. Just so you know, we plan on selling a plugin for the JW Player that allows publishers to serve ads using the OpenX ad server by using the OVA implementation. Our intent is to offer the plugin under an annual license similar to the other ad plugins we currently offer within our AddOns library (ex. DART InStream etc)

Since we don’t have everything together and since you are an early adopter of the plugin, go ahead and purchase a license to the player and begin using the OVA plugin w/ it. Once make our official announcement around the OVA project, we can figure everything out.

The only thing I ask – assuming it is not too much trouble - is that you provide us with feedback around the plugin once you have begun to use it.

Greatly appreciate you using our products and I apologize about the confusion.

Thx again
Dave

I have been using the openx plugin with jwplayer V5.0 for a while now and now serving around 1000 views a day (testing it on a few videos) and it seems to be working quite well.

I have reported a few bugs to the writer of the program so far but seems quite good.

Running it under V4.5 (default which it comes with it) or V4.6 there where a number of bugs with it I found, but under V5 seems to run fine.

If you want anymore feedback please contact me directly (lennon@orcon.net.nz)
Thanks

@Dave but in general it sounds like you're saying the interpretation is correct, that I can't use JW player (even with a commercial license) to serve up ads on a separate in-house ad-platform. Is that correct?
