Do I need a License?

215 replies [Last post]

Dear Sir or Madam,

Do I need a License for my personal website www.mediaportfolio.ca?

Please let me know.

Thank you,

Do you make money from your site or promote a commercial service?

I am looking for full time job and that's why I am showing videos in interviews.

You can continue to use the non-commercial player here.

I don't make any profit from my site... There is one banner ad in it but I don't own it the host does.. Do I still need to buy the liscense? I don't use the jw player yet though....

Banner ad = commercial endeavor.

Hey, if I work for a government office, and am using the player to display government information, i.e. things about education do I still need a license? (no commercial endeavors?)

You can continue to use the non-commercial player then.

Couple of questions. Do I have to buy two license if I want to add more than one player on the same site? If I need to purchase a license, will I be charged a foregin transaction fee since it seems this site is only excepting Euros? Is there a single skin or player that will allow me to add more than one video to the same player?

Nope, only one license is needed.

How can I obtain a version of image rotator without a logo for a non-commercial website? It is a blog without advertisements or any commercial endeavour.

Are you a registered non-profit? What is the site?

If we are promoting one web site but have different squeeze pages (with different domains to build our email list) are we allowed to use just the one license we bought?

channeledreadings.com

What are squeeze pages?

Squeeze pages are landing pages created to solicit opt-in email addresses from prospective subscribers. They have different domain names but you don't consider them a separate site.

hello,
if i buy a license will i I obtain a version of image rotator without a logo for a non-commercial website?

yes

Hi there,
I'm a video director/editor and I'd like to use your player on my site that shows my work. Do I need to buy a license?

If you buy a license does it have the JW logo on it?

Thanx

You can continue to use the non commercial player.

If you purchase a license there will be no JW logo.

hi
can i use this player to my client website which is a event management company they want to use your player in first page to show their work.
is any license is needed ?
pls replay

If you are going to be making money from this website, you will need a license.

Hello,

Hi,

Are there any plans to provide a license under GPL for DotNetNuke just like this is done for Moodle, Joomla en Drupal?

Hi
Im having a kindergarten and we need to use the product to show kids and the school activities... no advs.. please advise..
thank you

Hi,
I'm working for a local government and want to use the player on our website (www.lwl.org).

We are using a CMS (Zope) and there is a growing number of several videos to show. Do I need one license or do I need more than one license or neither nor? :-) Thanks for your kind answer.

Karsten

Ethan,

2 questions:

1
I've got a website which I used to use for a tutoring business that I am no longer pursuing.
Could I archive education research presentations on my site or would I need a license?
I am getting paid to video tape the presentations and post them somewhere and I'll be putting those same presentations up on youtube and in possibly in podcasts as well. Any extra time I spend putting the vids on my site would not be paid for.

2
The university may want to host the presentation videos on one of their own internal sites. Would they need a license to do this?

Thanks,

Hi Ed,

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on both of these sites.

Best,
-Ethan

We are a registered charity in the UK, and are setting up your player to show some of our media clips.
Do we need to licence the player?

Hi Robert,

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

Best,
-Ethan

Awesome! You guys rock.

Hi Ethan,

I want to use the Player on the personal Website from a TV-Moderator.

Do he need to licence the player?

Thanks for your answer and good work!

Dear Ethan,

sorry asking you again, but we would be very pleased to use the player on our website www.lwl.org.

It's a local government, but we use a CMS. Do we need to license the player?

Best regards
Karsten

I Have A Site That Has Ads, I'm Assuming I Need To Purchase A License For The Player, Correct? My Question Is I Run Multiple Blogs All On One Domain, How Many Licenses Would I Need?

Yes you would need a license. Since it is one domain, only one license is needed. :)

If possible soon: I need your answer. Thanks

Jay,

What is the site?

Best,
-Ethan

I'm developing a website for a University in Germany as student project.
We want to play flv-videos, so we need the JW-Player...
There is no commercials on the website, no ads - it's just a preview for future students with information about that department of the University and some e-learning...
There will be an offline version of that website (incl. the player) which will be distributed via CD / USB stick...

Which licence do I need for that project?

Thanks
Axel

Hi Axel,

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

Best,
-Ethan

Hi Ethan,

thanks for your quick answer. The site is:
http://julesmusik.de/test/up/showreel.html

Jay

Hi Jay,

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

Best,
-Ethan

We have a site that is the online news organization of a non-profit cultural association. No advertising customers to make money, only one photo of a book written by the Association. We need a license?

we want to show videos of college events on our college website. Do we need license?? no ads or banners on our site just college information.

You both can continue to use the non-commercial player on your sites.

Hello Ethan the site is active (www.edukanda.es), could you tell me if we need license?

thanks

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

I work for a municipal governement and we will be building a tourism site. The site will have videos featuring features of our City and highlight new educational and technological items.

No direct advertisment. Nothing being sold.

Likely we will get a license down the road regardless, to remove the JW logo.

Thanks.

Np :-)

Does that mean we are allowed to use the free version for now?

Nothing personal on the JW logo - we try to avoid any third-party logos wherever possible. I actually looked at your product again based on a similar site's code ;-)

Yes, you are allowed to use the free version for now :)

We are a UK company which is a registered charity. We do have activities that generate income but purely not-for-profit. We have paid for version 4 but would like to upgrade to version 5, do we need to purchase a licence?
Luis

Yes, the license for V5 is different, you should have received an email about an upgrade. Please email me your license # to ethan [at] longtailvideo [dot] com, thanks.

Hi,

Do i need to buy the commercial license if I develop a website for University video portal? This section is only accessible by the uni student only.

thx

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

Hi :)

I'd like to use Your player on Capoeira group site. There are no ads or commercials on that site. We don't earn money from the site but from trainings of Capoeira. The site is used partly as commercial of our group to get new members that's why I'm asking.

BTW: Is there different ordering process for v4 and v5 license? (I like the 4 version layout better :) and the 'stop' button which I couldn't find in v5 version )

Sorry for putting few things in one topic.

If the site is non-commercial you can continue to use the non-commercial player.

The license for V5 also covers V4 :)

Hi,

I'm deploying V5 to a VLE for the Emmanuel Schools Foundation group of 4 secondary schools.

We want to use the player but without the watermark as it is distracting. Would it be possible to credit the player elsewhere on our site, loose the watermark and not have to pay for a licence for a non-commercial use?

Kind regards

Luke Browell

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site, but if you wish to remove the watermark, you will need to get the commercial version. E-Mail me at ethan [at] longtailvideo [dot] com and I will help you out :)

I am a visual artists and I have a site documenting my own work. there are no adds, or anything for sale. I have used the player for years, but now have the new logo on upgrade. as a visual artist the logo is an issue, can I have/use an non-watermarked version?

-kurt

(If not I think Jeroen's decision on this is kind of gross. $100 for an artist to get a watermark removed?)

If you wish to remove the logo you will need a license.

to all the folks who are only using it through the WP Next Gen Gallery plugin, this sucks. I am a non-commercial site that is forced to buy a commercial product.

welcome to the real web 2.0!

kurt, email me at ethan [at] longtailvideo [dot] com, thanks.

Hello Ethan,

I am developing the website for a Martial Arts school in China, in order to present it to people who might be interested in coming here and study.

We don't make money from our website, but from actually teaching Kung Fu to the students who come here.

Do I need a license for www.shaolin-kungfu.com (joomla-based)?

Kind regards,

John

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site.

I'm a designer for an internet marketing company and we are developing a wordpress site for a registered non-profit. I need to remove the watermark from the imagerotater. Do I need to purchase a license? We will be migrating the site to a different domain when it goes live, since for now it's on a development server. Will I need to purchase a new license when that occurs?

Thanks!

Elliot

You can continue to use the non-commercial player on your site, but if you wish to remove the watermark, a license is needed. You will not need to purchase a new license when you move servers.

We are a charity running classes and courses. We do charge for these events but are non-profit. Do we need a license to use the player to show these events on our website?

You can use the free player with our branding. If you wish to remove it or change the branding to your own, a license is required.

I work for the Government and we have created an electronic scrapbook of our anniversary year on DVD. We have some Flash video and I'd like to play them from the DVD. The product is desiged to run standalone from the DVD (no web server).

No advertising, no ads, no banners, not selling the DVD, distribution is limited to staff and select persons that particiapted in the anniversary events.

License required?

Would like to remove the JWLogo. License required? options?

thx

You can use the free player with our branding. If you wish to remove it or change the branding to your own, a license is required.

Hi,
Our school is taking part in a competition organised by Microsoft. We have to present our school and we would like to include some video material: presentations, a short video abour our school on the Internet page provided by the organizers. As I like your player very much, I would like to know if it is possible to use the free player there

Best wishes,
Julita

You can use the free player with our branding. If you wish to remove it or change the branding to your own, a license is required.

hi i am using a commercial web site.but i am not making any money using the videos i play.do i need to have license.

What is your site? You just said it was commercial, so that would mean that a license is required.

I've had a request from another website asking if I'll allow him to use my videos on his site.

If I give him my code 'as is' he'd be using my player, my videos and the adverts would also be mine. This will mean I can make changes to the video or setup which will be reflected on his site, without having to update his code.

Does he need a license, in fact does he need his own player at all?

I do not think they would need a license. Is your license a single domain license or does it cover more domains?

It's just a single license.

It occurred to me after I posted, that the other guy's site is technically a commercial site since it's selling a device. However any advertising revenue would come to me.

He would need a license, I would think, for this case.

How can I get a definitive answer?

I know he won't want to pay for a license since he's not going to make a cent out of it. I would have thought the spirit of the license would be satisfied since I have a license and I'm receiving the benefit of the exposure.

This is kind of an odd situation. So this guy asked to use your videos on his site? Couldn't he just use the free player, but still use your own videos? When you say that the adverts would be yours too, what are you referring to? What kind of ads?

The videos are compatible with his site so he would like to include them. The adverts are from my Longtail Adsolution account, so any revenue would go to me, not him. If he uses the free player I wouldn't be able to display those ads.

This is his site http://freemanbeetletrap.com

This is mine http://www.bees-on-the-net.com/honey-bees-for-sale.html

If you use the free player you will still be able to use the AdSolution.

Ok, now I'm confused. I thought the fact that determined whether a license was required was whether a site made money from the videos. So if there was any advertising a license was required.

My question was that if the advertising is essentially nothing to do with the site owner, why would he be expected to pay for a license?

Sorry if I'm being dense.

You are right, he would not need a license, that's fine.

Thanks Ethan, I appreciate your time and patience.

Np.

Hi Ethan,

I have embed JW Player on my website at www.graphicwebvideo.com/iquest_promo.html
and video loads first and then it plays mp4 file.

Please help.

Thank you,
Ash

Hi Ash,

You need to run this program on your MP4 file - http://renaun.com/blog/2007/08/22/234/

Also, how did you encode the file?

Thanks,
-Ethan

Hi,

We have a internet site where we post some useful content related to agriculture and pestcides. It is more like a CMS [content management system]. We don't have any commercials displayed on our site. Do we need a license inorder to integrate your player into our website?

Regards,
Praveen.

Hi

I'm setting up a training website and I have no knowledge of embeding flash into my site, however I'm told to look at your player, but I don't want to purchase a license yet if its not suitable so can I trial the free player and it works the way we want it can I then purchase the license. If I then purchase the license what will i then have to do to remove the JW logo......do I need to do something special?

Regards

Once you purchase a license you will receive a link to download the licensed player, with the logo removed.

Thanks for your reply on this Ethan. I originally encoded mp4 file with avc1 codec.

What format and codec supports of mp4 of this player?

Hi!

Do I need a license for my soccer teams website?
Non-profit webpage, but the club sponsor logos will be displayed.

Ash, the player supports H.264. It can be MOV, MP4, etc, as long as it is H.264.

That's how I have encoded but it's not playing. It plays after it loads.

Ash, did you use this application like I mentioned a few posts up?

http://renaun.com/blog/2007/08/22/234/

I don't have AIR program, any other suggestions?

You can download AIR. This program should fix the issue.

What I am doing with AIR. application please let me know steps.
I have encoded all mp4 files with H264 codec and it doesn't work.
It works on my local computer but when I upload it doesn't work.

Try to re-encode your files with HandBrake, I know it works in the JW Player for H.264 files - http://www.handbrake.fr/

Hi Ethan,

Thanks for your advise. I have spent enough time trying mp4 format. I tried encoding in handbrake as you mentioned but it still doesn't work so I will go with flv not mp4 format for this player. Thanks for your help.

I am going to run a commercial website so I am going to buy a license for JW Flash Player. My website is going to be represented as mydomain.com and mydomain.ca for marketing purposes, but it is the same website. Is it enough to buy one-website license in my case? Thanks!

Hi Ash, Np, sorry it was not working for you.

Alex, you would just need one license if the content is the same.

What about canonical domain names.? say a.com and b.com both points to a.com. Do i need 2 lic?
What if in some future point i prefer to revers it reverse the domain, now a.com and b.com both points to b.com?

You would need two licenses for this.

Also, licenses are also non-transferable.

Hi,

I work within an University for a Department that sells courses (not for profit) to members of the public.

1. Would we need a licence for the player?
2. When you mention the water mark, do you mean in the bottom left hand corner that disappears when viewing through the setup wizard? Are we able to remove this if using the free version?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

1. Would we need a licence for the player? - Not to use the free player.
2. When you mention the water mark, do you mean in the bottom left hand corner that disappears when viewing through the setup wizard? Are we able to remove this if using the free version? - You cannot remove the this with the free version.

Best,
-Ethan

Is a license required if I'm using the player only for mp3 files? The site has some ads on it.

-- Dan

i am a video editor and do corporate & wedding filming work, i display my work on www.redeyecapturelife.co.za. Will i need a commercial license for this site? We do promote our editing and filming services. Also planning a separate wedding site, will we need a license for it as well?

thanks

Dan, yes you would need a license. Ads = commercial.

Rohan, you are promoting your services, this also is a commercial endeavor.

Thanks Ethan,

appreciate the feedback. will look into buying a double license then.

thanks

Np! :)

Hello, i am french and i develop a website for an artist and her services; they are videos showing the artist in her shows (without external ads): i use joomla 1.5 and it is for flv videos. i do'nt understand on this site "http://www.joomlaplay.com/download/category/1-modulo.html" and on others the module mod_mediaplayerJ15_v1-1-1.zip have a licence GPLV2 and on your site there is a restriction; can i use the module mod_mediaplayerJ15_v1-1-1 without licence? thanks...

Hi i'd like to know a couple of questions about the license.

We're a non profit foundation that works between the local government and medical environment workers that try to facilitate and promote the development and comprehensive training of medical professionals.

http://www2.iavante.es/en/inicio

We've developed our own system for catalogue, convert and distribute video content.

The player and videos are stored in S3 (Amazon) and our media content server doesn't work like a frontend. It works with a REST API that return a embed label when a portal ask for a video.

For example our own web is consuming video via embed label.

http://www2.iavante.es/en/fundacion/iavantetv

Our web and other portals have no banners and no ads. But they could be in different domains.

Ok. And now the questions...

1. Do I need a license?

2. We'd like to remove remove the watermark. Do I need a license?

Thankyou.

gracia- since she is promoting her services, this is a commercial endeavor.

Juan - you can use the non-commercial player on your site, but if you want to remove the watermark, you would need a license to do so.

Thankyou for your very fast response.

Np!

Hello,
I work for a Spanish regional government agency, and we would like to use the player in our web site, wich offers just government information to citizenship (no commercial endeavors).
The site is:
http://www.carm.es
Could we use the free version?
Regards

Hello, its me again.

I'd like to know if it's the same with a license for the Grid plugin.

I mean that the player and the plugin will be hosted only in a domain but it will called via embed label from other domains. It's right with a single license for the player and the grid plugin?

Yes, you can use the free version for both both.

Yes, you can use the free version for both.

Sorry Etahn. I don't want to be a pain in the neck but this is not the question now. I understood it in the question before. The question now is if I can use a single license player if other domains take video via embed.

Thankyou.

Do you know the other sites that are embedding the player?

Sorry Ethan if this has been asked before.
I'm in a small band i wanted to create some kind of possibilty for people to listen to our new do-it-yourself created debut album. we are not making any profit with the band itself and are not trying to make any money with selling the cd as we are selling it for the price we have to pay to get it pressed (non-profit).
Do i need a commercial license in generall? would it make a difference if we wouldn't include a link to "sell" our cd on the same page as the player? we had to pay to get the cd pressed and all and i don't really want to pay more just to give people the possibility to listen to the songs in a good quality. and what if we wanted to include the player on our myspace page?
Sorry for the questions and thank you for your great work on the player. it is definitly the best.
P.s. my initials are JW and that would be a funny gimmick.

I have set up a support group for narcoleptic sufferers. It is not a commercial site and we do not have any advertisments. Can i use the free version of your software to show a tv clip we have featured in?
Miriam

Hi Ethan. Some domains are under our control but some domains are external sites. All those domains belongs to different projects under the same non profit foundation. All sites with no ads or commercial banners.

I can't give you a link because right now only one domain is using the player via embed but in the future will be more. Technically the player is hosted in one domain.

Thankyou for your time.

You can all continue to use the non commercial players on your site. If you wish to change the branding you will need to purchase a license.

Hello I am creating a portal COMMERCIAL, however, must be available for the embed site users if they want, can put the video on their sites (external sites), only one lic meets my needs?

You would just need a license for the Player/Viral Plugin.

Ah yes, if my site is in Portuguese, it is possible to change the language of the texts of Viral Plugin?

Another question, if you do not want to use the Viral plugin, I can describe the code in HTML?

It is not possible to change. You can put the embed code in HTML, but having Viral is easier since it auto generates it.

I have other questions too:
I can run videos on my external domains: Ex, YouTube, and other branches? Put on my site (say the "file").

What is the validity of the license? Monthly?

Can I use my skin (created by me) in a license?

Can I change the watermark of you water by a mine?

If I need a license to use on other sites of clients (say, a lot), I have discounts on licenses?

You need a license for each of the domains that you are running the site on.

The license is one time.

You can use own own skin.

Yes, with the licensed player you can change the watermark.

If you have a lot of clients, you should sign up for our reseller program, please email sales [at] longtailvideo [dot] com for more information.

Ah yes. sorry if I spoke out bad in the first question, I mean external videos on MY website:

example:
domainexternal.com / video.flv -> I can run this video in the player and that was my domain.com?

==
Sorry for all the questions, shall I have some questions before buying anything, you're very quick with answers, congratulations,
and thanks for the answers!

You only need a single site license, if it is your domain.

I'm making a website for a hobbyist musician. He wants people to be able to listen to his music. Since it has a playlist feature, JW Player seems great for this purpose.

He doesn't sell anything on his website (no merchandising, no ads). There will only be a bio and some contact details if someone can give him an opportunity to play live. Do I need a commercial licence for this?

When we start to "sell" his records on CD, but the "client" can set his own price (even 0, if desired). It's like "give us what you think it's worth". Do we need a commercial licence then? We may be setting up this pricing scheme in the future, hoping to get back at least CD-production costs.

When we start to sell records at fixed prices, I'm sure we need a commercial licence. If someone is actually buying records, I'll be happy to pay for a licence. :)

You can all continue to use the non commercial players on your site. If you wish to change the branding you will need to purchase a license.

I would like to use the player on a site (for a small nursing business that has no ads), to archive their PSAs and promotional videos. The business itself is for profit, but the context of the player use is purely informational/archival.

Do I need a commercial license?

Hi,

i want use jw player in my eduction site.
i plan for member ship charges for the register user
should i take commercial license for my player
still site is under construction and i am using free version, so please let me know when i need to take commercial license and how?
and i also want to remove the jw player logo and used my logo in my site so is i need to change code for my site or i can do it by just passing more var in same code.
please send me code if i need to change my code.

please let me inform on my mail: sushilsmailbox@gmail.com

Thanks

Justin - You can all continue to use the non commercial players on your site. If you wish to change the branding you will need to purchase a license.

Sushil - You are going to be charging members and you want to change the branding. You will need a license to do this. The licensed player will not have a logo/watermark.

I work for a non-profit goverment educational organisation. I believe we qualify for a free licence (even though in the past we have purchased the player just to show support). I'm looking for the source code for the flow plugin, as it doesn;t quite do what I need it to. Is this possible?

Naomi,

If you send me an email to darjan at longtailvideo dot com with documentation to support your non-profit status, I can process a free player license to you.

The flow plugin was not developed by us and we are not allowed to distribute the source code for it.

Best Regards,

Darjan

Hi Darjan. If I have made changes to the source then do I need to buy a licence regardelss? THanks

Naomi,

It depends on what changes you have made. If they are not related to advertising, then you do not need a license if you use the player on a non-commercial website. For example, you are allowed to change the color of the player in the source.

Best Regards,

Darjan

Hi Darjan

I've made a few more changes than that including skinning, a few hardcoded URLS for plugins etc. Had to change the captions plugin to treat .txt files as .xml files. Nothing that is revenue generating or involving any kind of advertising though.

Naomi

I have a license for 1-10 sites, but want some of our partners to be able to pull down the player for some specific video content and embed in their site. Will I need additional licenses if we exceed the 10?

I have a website as an introduce myself experiences in vocal & music. I want to show some video about my previous vocals. Would I use non commercial player in my website?

I am designing a website for a company, and the JW player is what my client wants to use. I understand a license is required for commercial sites.
My client wants to place a player on multiple pages on the same domain and so my questions are:
1. Do I need to purchase multiple licenses or will one license suffice?
2. Will one license enable me to place the player on multiple pages?
3. Can I buy the license and place the player on the pages of his site? Or does he need to buy the license and provide me with the code to put on the website?

Thank you,
Brian

@KN - Yes you would.

@Bahar - You can use the non commercial player on your site.

@Brian:

1) You only need the single license.
2) Yes.
3) Either way.

Thank you for your quick reply Ethan.

Much appreciated.

Brian

Np :)

Do sub-domains count as a single domain under a license? (ex: site.com and my.site.com)
Or do I need to purchase a license for each sub-domain?

You only need a license for the top level domain, sub-domains are included.

Dear Sir/Madam,

we also want to use your JP player for our server to display our own video.
we are one of univserity in HK and Please advice whether I can use it for non-commerical use

Thanks,
William

@William - You can use the Free version on your site.

Hi,

The license fee is a one-time, life-long covering payment?

If you only use the audio features (with ads next to it) you have to pay as well?

Regards,
Twan

@Twan - It is one time. And yes, ads = commercial license, regardless of if you are using audio features or not.

I'm a designer considering purchasing a Photocrati WordPress theme as a starting point to modify for a project for a client. I know Photocrati have an enterprise license to include your Image Rotator in their themes for resale but, between reading their FAQ and yours, I'm a little confused as to whether or not I need to buy a license from you as well as a theme from them if I were to use one of their themes for a client. I would, essentially, be "selling the site" to the client... but I don't think that's in the spirit of agreement necessarily. Please advise. Thanks!

You would need a license since you are getting paid to do work for a client.

I purchased a non-license version and then subsquently purchased a license. What do I need to do with the license number?

Hi there, basically I’m going to make a website showing other peoples videos that have been uploaded on YouTube or other similar websites. I will ask them to send a link of their video for me to embed the link into jw player. But I would like to add adverts on the jw player to earn money.

My first question is, do I need a license?

And my second question is what if they have all ready got Google adsense on their video, what would happen to the adverts you provide?

Or am I on a different page?

Sorry another question, what if i wanted to upload episodes which are longer than 10mins, where can i upload the episodes and still use the JW player with your ads embeded to earn revenue?

@Lori Wark - You can download the version with the logo from here - http://www.longtailvideo.com/order/view/

@Sho - You need a license. As soon as you mentioned "But I would like to add adverts on the jw player to earn money." That = commercial endeavor. If you wish to upload episodes which are longer than 10 mins, you should upload them to our own hosting account, and not YouTube. Or, you can use Bits on the Run - http://www.bitsontherun.com/

Thank you, One more thing, im kinda new to this hosting thing. If i had a website that was about cars and i had a subdomain name about anime. Both the same webhosting account but bought an additional domain name for different purpose, using the same FTP. Would i need just 1 license? And is this license for life?

The licenses are for life, but you will need a player license for each domain name that you are running the player on. If you animate site points to another domain, you would need a license for that as well.

Ok thanks, i just remembered, what if I used the normal jw player and then later decided to go pro. Would the adverts automatically appear on all of the videos I have embedded into my webpage? And what if some videos already had Google adsense on them? What would happen?

No, the ads will not automatically appear. You should sign up for our AdSolution, as you need to make coding changes to your player's embed code for the ads to start showing. I would start there. How are you already putting AdSense on your videos?

Sorry erm via youtube. I have seen many people with adsense on thier youtube video where you have to close the little box just like yours.

Sorry for soooo many questions, your a star!

NVM i just realised, even with google adsense, it doesnt show it when i post it into your JW player wizard...any reasons for that?

Got it, so you show them via YouTube. Np about all the questions. And the AdSense doesn't show because when using the YouTube API, the ads do not transfer over, only the videos do. If you want the close to play box like you have seen others do, sign up for our AdSolution.

cool, erm im very tempted but i want to wait for AS3 so i can play youtube HD...

Ok.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have created a blog to document my life with HIV/AIDS. In the blog I talk about prevention, my owm personal stories, my family and friends, politics and topics of the day with respect to HIV/AIDS. I do not accept any money nor do I have any ads (and never will) on my site. It is strictly for informational use with respect to education and a blog of my life. Do I need a license? From the other posts that I have read, I assume not. But you know what they say about assuming?

Thank you for you time,

Lloyd

You do not need a license, you may continue to use the free player.

Hallo!

We run the website http://www.landsmann-video.at/ and want to use the JW player for our own videos.

We produce image-videos for companies commercially but we do not make money from the website, it just presents us, the company and the projects we did.

Do we need a license in this case?

Big thanks in advance! Best regards from Austria!
Adam

You do not need a license, you may continue to use the free player.

Okay! Thanks for the fast answer!

Np!

I'm running a multi-language ecommerce website where the different language versions are served from subdomains:

www.domain.com (english)
fr.domain.com
de.domain.com
etc.

The different language versions are just localized copies of the main English language site, not different sites.

Do I need to purchase one license for each subdomain or is the single website license valid for subdomains as well?

Andrea,

You do not need additional licenses for subdomains. You can purchase a single site for your website.

Best,

Darjan

How long is a license good for? 1 year? Forever?

Dale,

A license for the player is forever and it will apply to all future upgrades of the 5x player.

Best,

Darjan

Hi,

We are planning to purchase JW Player License for our upcoming commercial website. In the registration form we need to enter Site URLs, but still now we didn't registered the domain name. For now, Is there any chance to enter our exiting domain name (some other site) in the registration form? Once we register our new domain, Is there any chance to replace our existing domain name with new domain name?

Regards
Nagi

Nagi,

Licenses are non-transferable from domain to domain. What I recommend is that you for now put TBA and when you have settled on the domain, please contact me at darjan at longtail video dot com and I will update your license with the domain.

Best,

Darjan

i made a website for a not commercial company (dance school no profit) can i insert the player jwplayer.js using a non commercial license?

Thanks

Albe,

Did you get paid for making that website? Also, can you show a link to the website?

Best,

Darjan

@Ethan

Hi, my new company is called Cliqface, we are a small company that produce online marketing films for businesses in Ireland. I spoke to you earlier today regarding a license to use your JW Player to display the films for our clients. What I forgot to mention was that we host all the films on our own website and they are launched from there to play on our client's website. My question is, because I am playing each film from my own domain, can I purchase just 1 license and use that player on all the films? I'll produce ~50 films in the next year.
Also, on your advice I spent a while longer looking through the Add Ons etc, I'm really impressed by LongTail and I'm looking forward to doing business with you in the future.

Thanks in advance

You just need the single site license .

Ethan

Thank you for your swift reply.

Declan

No problem!! =)

Hi. I embedded the imagerotator on my local community association's website (a non-profit organization). It works great on every page of the site, but when I added a second .xml file to show different images on one of the website's pages, the player won't work (I did change the image source file for the page in question). It works when I'm running it through Adobe Dreamweaver and checking it 'live', but not after its been uploaded to the web server. Any suggestions?

I want to add that when I change the image source file back to the original xml (like the rest of the website {http://www.midsun.org} is using), the player works fine. So, there seems to be a problem accessing the second xml (or with its coding), even though it's on the same server. The player loads, but no images play except via Dreamweaver. I've added both xml files below. The top one is the one that works all the time. Also realize I should have posted on a different forum, but didn't want to cross-post. Thanks.

First xml:

FYI, I figured out the issue. Cheers.

Great, glad you figured it out :) !

I'm a web developer and I have a client that is a non-profit - thecaringpeople.org. They are wanting to show some videos on their site. Since I will be paid for the work I do for them does this mean I'll need to have them purchase a commercial license?

Yes, since you are being paid for this work, this is a commercial endeavor.

Hi,

Please can you clarify a point for me... I work for a global corporate company with many websites running for our regional operations with the relevant cctld's. Many of the regional operations have multiple cctld's bound to a single site.

www.unit4.com being our corporate/investors web site and then there are a growing number of sites but all built on the same codebase solution. E.g. www.unit4software.co.uk, www.unit4agresso.no, www.unit4.es...

We are a commercial operation but our website is not Ecommerce, I presume that we would need to purchase a licence (not interested in the OVA), the player would be just to stream case studies and product insights, viral campaigns...etc ?!

Is the number of required licenses based on the number of cctld's that the player is to be used on?

Giles,

You will need one license for each top level domain.

That means that if you have subdomains like this:
a.somedomain.com
b.somedomain.com
c.somedomain.com

You would only need one license. If, on the other hand you use a
different domain for each language like this:

somedomain.co.uk
somedomain.nl
somedomain.fr

You would need a license for each domain.

I hope this helps,

Darjan

I've built a WordPress plugin that uses the JW Player to play videos from Amazon S3 using expiring URLs. I intend to sell the plugin.

I'm sure I need a license for my site, since it is a commercial endevour.

What I'm wondering is about those who would purchase the plugin...

I'd like to bundle JW Player with the plugin, so the user can just upload, install, and go. Would I need a commercial license for each distribution in order to bundle JW Player? Or, would the one for my site cover me... and, it would be incumbent upon whoever purchased the plugin to get a commercial license for their site?

The CC license you use, I know, does allow distribution of the player... I'm just wondering about some of the details.

Thanks!

John

John,

If you are profiting from your plugin, you need a license for the player for each customer. The best way to achieve this is through our reseller program. Can you send an email to sales at longtailvideo dot com answering the below questions to get started? We offer a 25% discount with reseller accounts.

Darjan!

Thanks! Sounds good. I'm still in the process of forming the LLC, etc. Once, I have that done and have the tax ID, etc... I will contact you.

Thanks for the help!

John

Hi,
under particular circumstances the Player (5.4) shows a menu at the end of playback (share - embed - info)
Is this menu also present in the licensed version? If yes: how can I get rid of it?

hi,
sorry for asking something that seems to've been said before, but i'm not sure - just want to avoid trouble: i'm using the flash mp3 player 3.8 for music and the jw player 4.2.9 for some video on my portfolio website - just finished university - so since now, i'm trying to find commercial work - and my website is my showcase - no ads - nothing to buy from - just trying to get hired.

Question # 01
Do I need a license?

Question # 02
In my case, does it make any difference, whether the work,
that is played in the player, was for a commercial brief
or for university?

here's the url:
www.dirkweiskopf.de
-> audio & video

thanks,
Dirk

@Fritz -- You need to download the player without the Viral plugin.

@Dirk -- You need a license because the purpose of a portfolio website is to promote your work, which, in turn is a commercial endeavor since you're not looking to work for free. It matters if you worked for free or not.

hi Darjan,

thanks for the response!
I'll check that license!

with best regards,
Dirk

hi,

we are developing a website for the friends and supporters of the local church organ ("Förderverein", or like dict.leo.org says: "In high school AE this would be called the "Booster Club").

the site is supposed to introduce the instrument and the church choir - and to inspire people to enter the booster club, for maintaining the organ with their fees. is this a "commercial" endeavour we need a license for?

a domainname/URL does not exist yet...

Christian,

It's a little bit difficult to tell without seeing the website. That said, is the local church organ a registered non-profit organization? In this case, you would not need a license.

Best,

Darjan

hi,

you can check some screenshots of the site at flickr:

(could you please remove this post after checking?)

christian

Christian,

You can use the non-commercial player for that website.

Cheers,

Darjan

that's great news, thank you very much!

I work in Corporation and have internal website (Intranet)
Since it's not for commercial and for internal use, do I need to get license ?

Avicenna,

All corporations need a license for the player to use it legally.

Best,

Darjan
