I've also got the same problem. I'm hosting some MP3 which I have to protect from being downloaded.
I wanted to use an Apache rewrite rule, based on a conditional referer. If we cannot set the referer, would there be another information that we could send in the HTTP request? (and not in the URL, because people would just copy-paste the URL to download the file).

The referrer comes from the browser and the Adobe Flash Player.
Internet Explorer sets the referrer, Firefox doesn't.
Same question interested. I use http referer in protection against "foreign" links to my mp3s. jwplayer can't access those mp3s, because it don't set referer.
