Compatibility with Akamai HD Network / HD Core classes

Hi,

I am currently using a licensed JWP 5.3 on a TV channel website with various CDN hosted videos (Bitgravity, Akamai).

I am testing an Akamai HD Network account but it seems JWP can't handle HTTP pseudo streaming on a file hosted on the HD Network. Video is playing but trying to seek in the timeline resumes to the start of the video.

My file is a MP4 H264 AAC file prepared for streaming and working fine with Bitgravity HTTP pseudo streaming.

So is JWP a supported video playback application for Akamai HD Network and its HDCore ActionScript classes ?

Sorry I already posted this in the servers & streaming section without knowing if it was the right place.

Regards,

The JW Player does not support Akamai's HD network. Akamai is working on an integration, but it's not done yet.

Thank you for your answer.

Any news or ETAs here?

In terms of development, I believe the Akamai provider is (about) done. Akamai is releasing this to its customers though, so you should probably nudge Akamai tech support to get access to the provider (or beta provider).

Has anyone actually gotten a hold of this provider through Akamai?

Here's the official response from Akamai:

Currently HD Network support for the JW player is still under development and legal/licensing discussion between Akamai & JW/LongTail. We do not have a date for when this will be made available. There is no beta testing. At least not at this time. As you know, that could change in the future.

Hopefully something will change on this soon, since I'm really getting tired of having to build out players in OSMF/Strobe in order to have working playback. Akamai's HD network is really amazing in terms of quality, but it's been a huge time investment trying to get working players with any type of decent feature set.

I can't get the bitrate level switching to work with Akamai HD - it never switches.

If it's done as levels: [...] it stays at the lowest bitrate.
If I do it using a .rss-playlist it stays at the highest bitrate.

Any ideas/hints?
Is Akamai HD now supported by 5.5?

@justbeez: The Akamai HD provider is coming indeed (dev work is done); at present only the licensing needs finalized.

@Patrick: Correct; for Akamai HD you do need the (upcoming) HD Network provider. JW Player by itself does not support the HD network.

@JeroenW What is "the (upcoming) HD Network provider"?

Reply

That's a plugin for the player that supports the HD network. Without that plugin, the Akamai HD network will not work (or at least very poorly).

I've had Akamai's HD network work in the sense of using it to serve an HD Video to a JW Player.

It just won't work after I enable the HD-Switching plugin.

Is this was the "Akamai HD provider" plugin is meant to remedy?

Reply

No, the HD plugin is a general purpose plugin for switching between an SD and HD video. It's mainly ment for progressive downloads.

Jeroen,

Thanks for the response--I'm glad to hear that it actually exists (most of Akamai doesn't know that much!), and I'm looking forward to this functionality.

Do you have any updates on timing or availability for this plugin?

Reply

It's still in Akamai Q&A. I'll post an update here when the provider is live.

We'll probably announce it in a newsletter as well.

Any updates on the JWPlayer/Akamai integration? I just got my Akamai account and I'm shopping for a full featured player.

Regards,
Matt

PS- Thanks for the hard work Jeroen & Team!

Let me check with Akamai after the weekend. They've been testing the player for a while now, should be ready ...

Hi Jeroen and this others :)

Don't want to seems impatient about the AkamaiHD integration but I ask me where this project is for now. Is there any way to be informed about the progression ? Thanx a lot in advance and by the way, let me greets the fantastic and flexible jwplayer !

Reply

Well, all coding is done and all testing is done. Akamai is now working with one of my colleagues on a press release and the final release. It's just moving all very slow ...

Reply

thanks you jeroen for this fast reply ^^

so is this final release available for jw customers using last version of jwplayer ? Is there any way to use AkamaiHD for now or have you plan a date for this ?

Sorry for having so many question and looking like so impatient, i really need this function soon and I'm asking me if it'll possible to run it in the time I have to plan my project.

I don't know the exact release date of this. I do know tihs provider will be offered to all Akamai customers.

The provider was built by Akamai and they control the release (date)...

Reply

Do you know the date of the release . someone says to me that
the JWplayer is not compatible with akamai hdcore js...

and we have a website which goes out on september.

thanks for your update ...

Reply

Hope it can be released soon

Reply

I am in need of this as well. Any news?

Reply

Up ???? is there any news ...

Reply

Akamai is still working on the release - docs, license and such. Sorry this is taking so long, but it's out of our hands ...

Reply

Well, this is consistent with my experience with Akamai . . . it's a very large ship that turns very, very, very slowly.

It's unfortunate that so many of us have had to invest so much time and effort in building players on OSMF/OVP/Strobe that we might get stuck moving forward with that platform even once they finally release this plugin.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on this Jeroen . . . at least customer service isn't dead here!

Any news on Akamai HD? We would like to move to Akamai HD but want to remain with JW.

Reply

Still not, sorry. This has been 6 months, and we're still pinging them every few weeks to see what's up.

Unfortunately, we can also not release by ourselves, since Akamai wrote the code.

Any news on this?

No, still nothing ...

Reply

Just to inform you, we are also using 5.3 licensed and would like Akamai HD support :-)

Any news if it is supported yet?

Nothing still. Frankly, at this point it might be better to use our Adaptive provider and the HLS capabilities of Akamai to serve adaptive streams to JW Player:

Reply

Any additional news on this? For us, HLS isn't a viable option for some of our content, and we'd really be able to switch back to JW player for those cases.

Thanks!

Reply

I still don't have any news at this point.

Why would HLS not be an option for you, btw? Do you leverage specific features that are not supported in HLS?
