Variable speed playback

9 replies [Last post]

Hi again,

Another feature which I believe is not available in any of the embedded movie players: variable speed playback, i.e. "fast forward". This would enable moving quicker through the movie while still seeing what is going on. It makes it easier to get to the point you want (e.g. when you resume watching a movie).

Not sure the flash engine allows it, but if it does that would be great.

Jacques.

It's on the Roadmap.

Is variable playback speed still on the roadmap? In what version will it be implemented? I don't see it on the roadmap page.

I'm very interested in this too — I'm hoping to be able to play video and audio back at a slower rate (ideally a percentage) in order to do transcriptions on flash (and mp4 videos).

Would love to know if this is still on the table.

You can use the  Shortcuts  plugin to step through the video and to play the video at a reduced framerate.

Since the source code of the plugin is available, you can change its behavior to suit your needs and then re-compile the plugin with the free MXMLC compiler.

See: http://www.longtailvideo.com/AddOns/get-instructions.html?addon=89&q=

The Shortcuts plugin is nice for faking slower playback speed if you only have video without audio, and if you don't mind the pause/play button going crazy :)

However, i need to be able to play video's with speech for educational purposes, doing it this way would really mess up the sound.

In Windows Media Player, there is an option to play certain video's at a percentual speed, with little quality loss on sound and video. An option like that would be really great.

I develop for an educational site with just short of 200,000 students. This is one request we see a lot--variable speed playback.

There's really no way to support this at present, but we'll keep it in mind regardless.

I'm also developing an educational site and am looking for variable playback for mp3 players embedded on a webpage.

Has this been developed at all? and if not by this company, than maybe by another?

The only solution I'm aware of for this is http://www.enounce.com In the current version, though, it's a client-side install marketed to end-users individually, not something delivered by the individual Web page.
