Plays great in FF, Choppy playback in IE6 / IE7

Greetings,

I have implemented the JW FLV Player using an XML playlist so that I can play pre- and post-roll advertisements. (Not to worry, our company bought the 50 domain license)

I am also using xmoov-php to implement the HTTP streaming option. I have left the settings at their defaults. This was done to get better performance for slow connections, and it did in fact help. Somewhere in this process, I believe that I switched out the player.swf, as instructed by one of these threads (can't find it now) because of something to do with the Flash version (?)

In any event, lately we have been receiving reports that in IE6 and IE7 the video playback is very choppy. I was finally able to reproduce the issue and it is very strange indeed. The audio plays smoothly, but it looks as though the video is dropping frames. Initially I though this had to do with how the video was encoded, its framerate or something like that. However, I found that the pre-roll and post-roll ads, which are being served from another server altogether, are also having this happen. Again, the sound is smooth and the buffering is okay, but the playback just looks choppy. We have never

You have a server problem. You can see from this download using wget, that the download rate sometimes drops very low, too low for the video download rate to keep up with the player consumption rate. Therefore the video stutters.

This has nothing to do with IE or the JW Player.

Sometimes, your video download failed completely.

We are testing the download rates now, but I have a hard time buying into the idea that it has nothing to do with IE or the player, only because nobody has been able to reproduce this issue in FF. Can you? Both from work and from home, it works well in FF.

In the meantime, I will take this information to the infrastructure team and see if they can tell me why those transfer rates are dropping.

If you don't need to seek ahead of the download point, why would you ever use a PHP script and incur the tremendous overhead of passing the video through PHP?

The main purpose of the xmoov script and other stream scripts is to enable pseudostreaming which also requires the metadata. (The xmoov script also has a couple of minor functions for bandwidth limiting and prevention of caching [which doesn't work], but those can easily be done without passing the video file through PHP.)

The xmoov script is for the "hobbist"; you know, the guy with a free hosting account who can't install a real video server, yet wants to be able to scrub ahead in his videos.

If you don't need to seek ahead, just do a simple progressive download. Handle any other functions in a FastCGI server and pass the video serving back to the main server.

Your video stumbles equally as bad in FF as IE. That's partly because you are re-sizing on the client while simultaneously downloading the video file, which results in almost 100% CPU usage. You should size the player's display area to be the same as your video file's native size, which is 544x408, to avoid re-sizing on the client, especially when using FLV files. H.264 in the MP4 container avoids a lot of this.

Also, you should review the v4.x player supported flashvars here: http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/wiki/FlashVars because you have v3.x player flashvars mixed in with v4.x player flashvars.

Putting the "psuedostreaming" script into place was the only thing that really helped. Once that was installed and the buffering was removed completely, the videos seemed to play quite well. Adding the metadata during the creation of the video object was considered, but given that the desired effect (smooth playback) was achieved, this has not been implemented into the CMS.

I don't see any way that bandwidth throttling could improve performance on slow links, but if you saw improved performance, I'll take your word on that. My best guess is that it's really masking some other problem(s).

I would never recommend bandwidth throttling to improve performance on slow links.

You will have much worse performance using RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol) on slow links. There is very little buffering, so if the link can't keep up with the video, it will pause frequently. Most who have tried it on slow links have given up and now use a fast video server like nginx with the streaming modules if they need to seek beyond the download point.

The main reason for the stumbling is the maxed out CPU. Flash is a real CPU hog when simultaneously downloading and re-sizing on the client. Once the downloading finishes, the playback with re-sizing isn't so hard on the CPU.

The flashvar displayheight is only for the v3.x players.

The flashvars width & height are only useful when using resizing, when embedding in an application like Flex, so they aren't useful in normal player code either.

Putting the Adobe Flash Player into wmode=transparent is very CPU intensive and buggy. Don't use it unless you absolutely have to have a transparent player so content (like a background image), that is behind the player, can show through the player.

Notice that height is the desired display area plus 20px for the control bar. If you use a skin, the control bar height can vary from to 20 to ~50px, so adjust the height accordingly.

Your player code should look like this:

I have put a test script in place that allows for some variable testing. You will find it at the following URL:

You can manipulate the page setup using the following URL parameters:

wmode=off - turns off the "wmode = transparent" flashvar

resize=off - turns off the "height" and "width" flashvars

yui=off - turns off the Yahoo YUI ImageLoader

streamer={streamer_name}|off - use the streamer at http://www.multichannel.com/common/{streamer_name} (defaults to "videoStreamer.php") OR if "off", removes the "streamer" flashvar

player={player_name} - use the player at http://www.multichannel.com/common/{player_name} (defaults to "player.swf")

So, for example, http://www.multichannel.com/sandbox/video_test.php?wmode=off&resize=off&player=player_new.swf

I have duplicated the high CPU Usage, and the best remedy I see on my end is turning off the Yahoo YUI (yui=off). I'm not sure why this is, but I have a ticket open over at YUILibrary (http://yuilibrary.com/projects/yui2/ticket/2527822), so hopefully they can shed some light on why this is happening.

Also, I did get the new player as you suggested. I renamed it to player_new.swf and uploaded it to the server. You can test it by running http://www.multichannel.com/sandbox/video_test.php?player=player_new.swf Unfortunately, all it does is spin when you hit play. Right click shows that it is in fact the new player. Any ideas why this isn't working?

I know you were questioning how the streaming could help. Maybe you can test it from your end without the streaming. For me, it seemed to make things worse when I turned it off, but I'd be interested to hear what you experience with it off...

Something is wrong with your page that has nothing to do with the JW FLV Media Player.

This has actually already been done in the production environment, so no, I'm not holding out for miracles.

Also, as I already stated, the YUI seems to be causing the CPU load to spike, so if you want to test the player page without the YUI loading AND with the new player, you would go to http://www.multichannel.com/sandbox/video_test.php?player=player_new.swf&yui=off

The URI that is being passed to the "file" variable has already been URL encoded, so I'm not sure how that's relevant.

I mean, do you actually have any idea why directly swapping out player.swf for player_new.swf would cause a problem? If so, I would love to hear your idea(s). If not, then we are just wasting time here.

I appreciate your efforts, but if you aren't going to actually help me identify any of the "many, many things" wrong with this implementation, then there really is no since in continuing this thread.

On my Safari/MAC, the video also performs very bad. In fact, I'm not able to load a video at all. The player setup and the page scripting are both fine.

I'd really advise to dispense with the PHP script, since this seems to cause the issues. It looks like your files are on Akamai, so after you removed the script loads should be very fast.

I am currently testing using the 4.4.129 release and it seems to not work at all when using the streamer! So, I am sending out links to test scripts to several clients and hopefully their performance will improve greatly.

As an example, this link seems to play well for me:

But then, I never experienced problems, so I guess we'll see when the clients try it out.

Is there any merit to this statement that you know of? This was put into place in order to keep the drop-down menu from going behind the player. If you add "&wmode=off" to the URL above, you can see this behavior. Is there a preferred way to stop this from happening?

In fact it is a true statement BUT there is a simple solution. Use wmode=opaque. It will solve the problem but not have the adverse effect that wmode=transparent does.
