Blackberry support

Hi,

I've been working to get a video playing on a host of mobile devices using BitsOnTheRun, and its working great on iPhone, iPad, Android, as well as on desktop browsers, but I am having serious problems with Blackberry.

I noted from this past thread that it is supposed to support blackberry 5/6 out the box, but I cannot see the videos at all on Blackberry 6 (5 at least gives the option to download the video), it doesnt even display the start time or play button, theres just nothing there.

I have tried with the simulators from Blackberry, and that does work, but thats not much use to the client - can you tell me, if the videos do work on version 6, what exact release number is that? In case we are on the wrong version?

Also, I have viewed http://www.longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run/ on our devices, and we see no video on the right of the home page.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sorry, this was the past thread I have viewed for reference: <long tail video dot com> /support/forums/bits-on-the-run/content-delivery/16781/device-compatibility

there was advice in there to look at the home page, but that video is also not working on blackberry for us.

Thanks

ps. your own url is triggering span filters?!?

Our experience with blackberries is that unfortunately their media support is fickle and not very well documented. It is very well possible that some devices and even some providers will work differently from what the box says.

One limitation that we have seen from testing is that all traffic gets filtered through Blackberry servers and that in some cases the blackberry servers will simple refuse to allow access to larger video files. We haven't been able to get final measurements on this, but it looks like video can get blocked if it is more than 5-10 MB or when it is more than a 1-2 minutes.

For future reference: we have discovered that BB6 claims that it is able to play back HTML5 video, while, in fact it doesn't.

We have made a workaround so our embed codes will explicitly detect blackberry OS devices, and will use the direct link method for blackberries, rather than the HTML5 video tag. This should resolve issues on BB6 devices.

This update is scheduled to go live Wednesday next week.

Where can I download the new update?

This is the Bits on the Run hosted service. There is nothing that needs to be downloaded.

For people that are hosting their own JW player: the latest trunk of the player has implemented a fix to make HTML5 video on Blackberry work again: http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/browser/trunk/fl5

This will also be part of JW player 5.9
