Calculating average price per GB

My business model involves paying people a specific amount per hour of viewed video. Given that all my videos are uploaded in the same format, is it possible to work out approximately how much bandwidth would be used for 1 hour of video delivery?

I'm afraid that there would be no reliable way to do that; there are too many unknown unknowns:

  • The bitrate of resulting video is not fixed but depends on complexity of original video
  • Our videos use bitrate switching for the best user experience. This will mean that not each view will necessarily result in the same amount of delivery
  • Time viewed is only tracked in the Flash player, that means that views in HTML5 mode (eg. iPad) does not get counted in the statistics (at least not at the moment)
  • Also, this does not take into account the amount of delivery used by players that cache video that isn't played, or replays because of scrolling back that do not generate any delivery because the video was still in the cache

You could get a long way by just measuring what a couple of users do and extrapolate that data, but it will never be accurate or reliable I'm afraid.

Do html5 views gets counted in any way? Not in minutes, but just hits to the video?

The views in the dashboard take into account all sorts of views; also HTML5 views. In the analytics export HTML5 views are counted as downloads.
