Analytics - Where have my videos been embedded?

Hello,

Similar to this post: http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/bits-on-the-run/miscellaneous/21407/analytics-mysterious...

we are seeing extremely high video view rates for the number of page views on our site where the videos are embedded. Perhaps the videos have been embedded on others' sites and are being played there as well?

To help me figure out what is going on, could you tell me the domains the following are embedded in how many views each domain is responsible for? These are a representative three of the six videos in question.

1. TUGpLkNy
2. xptKkm6V
3. j7ifkdth

Thank you,
Katy

Generally when this sort of discrepancy happens there is something else going on. Can you give me a link where you have embedded these videos so I can see if maybe something else is happening?

Sure, it's www.takepart.com/contagion

We are running an ad campaign so maybe we're just really getting *that many* views. Just want to be certain though before I send around conversion rates for views to page views. The page is outside of our CMS so we had to add SiteCatalyst code to make sure it was getting counted; GoogleAnaltyics does not recognize it as page.

Thanks!
Katy

Any update? Thanks, remco!!

I'm puzzled. I have done a whole bit of investigating about what can and what cannot be the case and I have asked an engineer to look into it further.

So it looks like someone might be leaching your videos directly for some reason, as with embeds we should at least continue to see analytics and such. If you don't offer the video to download anywhere, you can secure video downloads in your account by going to:

Account => Properties => Streaming. You will need to select the option: Secure video downloads but allow video embeds.

If you were to have a player somewhere else that links directly to the video file, that would cease to be working too at that point though.

Thanks -- looping in some other folks on my team so they can determine if it would be safe to disable streaming.

Only downloads, you will need to continue to allow embeds.

Disabling downloads could possibly break things if:
1) You were to offer video downloads somewhere (for example by publishing to iTunes)
2) If you are somewhere not using our player embeds, but are hosting your own players.

We checked and that setting was already in place. It's set to "secure video downloads but allow player embeds." Any other things to check? Could you take a look at the page itself to see if anything looks off? takepart.com/contagion

The account that this video was in definitely had video downloads still on.

I just changed the security setting, let me know if this made any change or broke anything.

The six videos still play fine on the site. Today is the end of our ad campaign too, so not sure if we'll be able to tell if the reduced views is from fewer people going to the page or from your change to the settings. We're going to buy the Support Package, too, so we'll be in touch!
