Although the new Longtail WP Plugin allows a Highwinds Live Flash Stream to be embedded in a WP page -- the process completely bypasses the friendly user interface that the Plugin provides -- and it requires manual construction of the Flashvars code.
Please consider incorporating the ability to add Flashvars in the Plugin's menu system. This will allow a great number of less-technical users to embed a live stream in a WP page.

could someone please explain how to manually do this in the meantime?
I just got setup with highwinds, so I am new to their service.
Normally I used to use my own wowza server for live broadcasting, and it all worked great.
I can't even figure out how to start using highwinds live 'smil' files in wp.
any example code would be awesome

You could do this with Wordpress Shortcodes.
for example - [jwplayer file="video.flv" streamer="rtmp://" provider="rtmp"]
