Am i being ripped off?

21 replies [Last post]

Hi im part if the ad solution and it seems the system is ripping me off. Basically looking at this months revenue i know its not the final amount but it states 9,656 ad impressions for which my ecpm average is $0.40 thats the average at the bottom as it verys from around $.40-.70 which states revenue generated is $3.88 however i have had 106 clicks for which i dont see any stats on how much i earn per click which im told dosent show but its not reflected in my revenue so if i am paid on my clicks where is revenue for the clicks. JW ive emailed you and you dont seem to reply and Ethan who is my current advisor dosent seem to be able to tell me. Anyone else having the same problem? Im preaty sure thats not legal in the sence its the equivalent of someone haveing 2 tills with one load of revenue being disclosed and the other not. Please can you either explain and please dont remove this topic otherwise ill have to post it on anouther site.
Thanks
Suley

Suley,

We don't rip anyone off and to my knowledge the Total statistic at the bottom calculates revenue correctly. If you email me directly w/ your publisher name, I'll do my best to help you out. My email is adam )at( longtail video (dot) com.

My site generate 6K ads impressions per day with about 100 clicks per day. They are paying me $1 per day. I am going nut!

John,

If you have produced your own content (videos), or have a license to legally distribute your content, we can switch you over to premium ads, which pay a lot more.

Send an email to me to get started.

$1 for 6,000 - that's the biggest rippoff I've ever heard of!. I was considering monetizing my video content with your ad solution, but I know that the average for good content is $30 / 1000 video ads - and I would like to know how much your solution would pay out- it sounds like I should just got directly to an ad agency and sell the traffic to them! - it's better than making less than 1% of what my traffic is worth through your ad solution.

Are you saying that average CPM for good content is $30?

I have been working in the Online Video Advertising industry for over two years and I can tell you that such earnings are unheard of -- especially in this economy.

May I ask what website you were using our AdSolution on? Were you approved for Premium Ads (Google, ScanScout, or Yume)?

actually $30 CPM is not that unreasonable. According to Internet Advertising Bureau, the avg. video ad for 2008 is $40 - $50 CPM

Tim,

To begin with, that is just a benchmarking study. Like with all benchmarking studies when it comes to Advertising on the internet, they should be taken lightheartedly -- especially if they are outdated. The reason why I am saying that is because after two years in the industry, I have never seen CPMs that high. As stated in the guide, "Benchmarking studies are not intended to provide projectable results".

With that said, there is a big difference between CPM, and eCPM. A lot of Advertisers mislead Publishers by saying that they offer $40-$50 dollar CPM. However, what they do not tell you is that this magical CPM only applies to the first 1,000 impressions give or take. I, too, can offer you the same CPM under this criteria if need be.

That is why after your first 1,000 impressions, their lucrative earnings quickly begin to fade once the ad-inventory is sold out and practically, you are left with an effective CPM (spanning all of your impressions) much lower than what you initially thought you were going to make -- just like in your study above!

Before I move on, I should say that is why we report eCPM, and not CPM alone.

Moreover, I highly encourage you to try as many advertising networks as you possibly can. There are only a select few in the industry and we work with most of them in one way or the other. Therefore, I am very well familiar with what kind of earnings actually take place, and what kind of earnings can only be found in a benchmarking study.

We have a plugin called "Adtonomy", which lets you use your own video ads. If you believe that you can sell your inventory in the range of $40-$50 you should definitely consider it.

Best Regards,

Darjan

So, what is your recommendation for ad network with the highest earning potential (and their eCPM)?

It depends on the nature of your content and traffic. Can you show me a link to your website so that I can evaluate?

www.mysoju.com

can you tell me what network would work for those contents? thanks.

Tim,

Please correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like you only have stolen (anime) videos on your site.

To qualify for good premium ads, you must either have produced your own content (videos) or have a license to legally distribute your videos.

All of high earnings networks, such as Google Adsense for Video and/or YUME, have the above requirement.

Also, from a technical perspective, video ad networks will not be able to implement their technology on embedded players from other sites. You must use a single player on your site, like the JW Player, or Flowplayer, to be able to implement premium ads.

Best Regards,

Darjan

My site generate 6K ads impressions per day with about 100 clicks per day. They are paying me $1 per day. I am going nut! http://wpclassifieds.net

that's just an example of the contents that we're building .. the site is not actually up yet. ... the contents will be playing thru a player we host, not embedded like above. ... just trying to find out which ad network to go with

@Marcio, I was not able to find a video (using our adsolution on) http://wpclassifieds.net/

@Tim, if you are having stolen content on your website, like on the example you showed me before, then no premium ad network will want to work with you.

Darjan

A quick question on "adtonomy"

If I implement your player and that add-on, do I get to keep 100% of the income that I generate?

I have a site which is wholey my own content and am looking for a system like yours, though I have seen on other forums that people have signed up for ad solution only to find they either pay you a % or have a % of their ad space taken by you. Could you ley me know.

Cheers

Jools

Jools,

Adtonomy lets you run your own ads exclusively, and you keep all of the monetization generated from it.

Keep in mind, however, that this plugin costs 99 Euros for one domain.

Best Regards,

Darjan

O.k I'm confused. It may just be me not understanding though.

I've just read through this topic and it seems like the only way I can make money from video advertising is if I qualify for premium ads?
Am I right in thinking you have to have a large number of regular viewers to qualify?

The reason I ask is I'd like to run a video blog (vlog) site which displays content I've made myself as well as content I have a signed agreements to distribute. (site doesn't exist yet)
I am not looking to get rich off of this but would need to cover the cost of running the site, a bits on the run account (with each video covering the cost of it being there), and hopefully some money towards travel expenses as the videos I make would involve interviewing people all over the UK.

As the site is going to be very new it is unlikely to reach huge numbers of viewers right away but to make it work in the long term I need everything set up from the beginning.

Any advice from anyone would be very useful. The way this convo has gone makes it sound like I don't stand a chance in hell of making my money back.

Should I just be uploading peoples content via wordpress and vimeo (all free) and forget about the interviews?

Jay,

You can make money using the regular AdSolution. However, the difference is that premium ads pay a lot more.

You do not need a lot of impressions to qualify. Some of our publishers running premium ads, from AdSense for Video for example, have an Alexa ranking over a million.

What you do need, however, is a professional website with no foul content. Also, you need to have produced all of your videos, or have a license to legally distribute your content in order to qualify.

Best,

Darjan

Darjan,

Do http://www.gizmovideo.com qualify for LongTail Premium AdSolution.
All videos are produced by me, except the first one - Why Video and the last one - Video Hosting (got permission from Jeroen)
I already have a commercial license.

GDL,

My co-worker Ethan has submitted your website for approval with premium ads.

I believe that you two have already emailed with each other :)

Best,

Darjan

Thanks Darjan
