Let us rename the "HD" plugin or have an HQ option

10 replies [Last post]

Let's be honest here, few people are putting 720p video on the web let alone 1080p. Having a button say HD when content is NOT HD just adds to the hundreds of thousands of products falsely claiming HD functionality. Let's not have JW Player take the same route of those As-Seen-On-TV HD sunglasses.

So yeah, an option to change the wording or at least a toggle that says HQ instead of HD would be nice.

Or how about a simple toggle that displays the bitrate? Or instead of HD say how many progressive lines there are like hulu does. Ex: 360p, 480p

Thanks for listening.

I think maybe you've fallen behind a bit, even YouTube is serving 720 & 1280 HD video.

Many sites like Vimeo have HD:

    http://www.vimeo.com/hd

Most of the content on PBS is HD.

And the list could go on until the sun sets next week...

LOL, you fell for it!

See, they use the term HD on Youtube and site you mention for content that's sub 720p, just like those nonsensical HD sunglasses. Wake up!

I guess they fooled people like you and that's why they do it. It tricks people into thinking they're watching an HD stream. I guess it has a placebo effect on indivduals like that. Do you enjoy your content more when you believe you're watching an HD stream?

I'm not into fooling visitors. Not my bag.

              ROFL !!!

You're the only fool here.

I have lots of video that I downloaded from those sites and it's 1280 or better.

Were you born this way or is it a "behavorial condition"?

Thank you Hobbs, you've been SO helpful on this topic. Your suggestions and instructions and constructive suggestions have REALLY added value to this messagboard.

*rolls eyes*

So, I decided to edit the plugin. I found a copy of it on the repisotory and what I plan to do is edit so that instead of HD it reads it the lines of resolution (480p) or bitrate selection (700kbps) or file types (MP4, FLV). I haven't really decided yet. Some videos I plan to post such as live feeds from handheld game consoles: (Neo Geo Pocket, Game Boy Advance, etc) don't have HD resolutions. But I'd like users to choose from original resolution and an upscaled resolution. So you can see why to me HD isn't always the correct way to serve content.

My question, how do I go about editing the plugin? Do I need Macromedia flash at all or can I edit files then compile without it?

Thanks.

Okay I setup the SDK and figured out how to compile. I guess now all I need to do is learn actionscript. Hmmmm.

Actually, I'll put my 9,000+ helpful posts over the last 3 years up against your  —WHOOPS—  none, zero, nada, zip, helpful posts, any day.

'nuff of the shenanigans.

Here's a couple of YouTube MD & HD files for you:

So, you can see that that YouTube isn't even taking advantage of the full native resolution of their videos because for both files, they could have made the displayarea considerably larger.

1280x720 is HD enough for me, especially on the Internet, where most users can't sustain the 2082kbps to watch the HD real time.

Good luck with the plugins, I've modified quite a few of them and I can tell you from experience, ActionScript has a steep learning curve. Not so much the language syntax, because it's close to JavaScript, but the, "What is Flash going to do, if I use this code?"

(I love how Hobbs PROVES my point by linking to a youtube page that practices the very kind of false advertising I was talking about. Amazing.)

Hobbs I don't know what to tell you, the evidence is right in front of you but you're blind to it somehow. The sub HD video is labeled as HD. Are you serious or trolling? Why do you care so much about this anyway? I didn't come here to educate you on HD video. It was simply an example I used to illustrate why the label "HD" doesn't apply to every situation.

The functionality? Solid. It's great to have a button for switching versions.

I might have a solution though. Since my initial posting I've learned plenty. I'll update if I make any progress.

I've been here for 3 years. You're the only troll that I've seen in a while.

The HD video is1280x720, that's HD enough for me.

Hobbs, please seek another outlet for your trolling.

I'm not here to discuss video resolutions. I'm here to talk about the functionality of the button and extending it's current limited applications.

Mayhaps you would feel more at home trolling the doom9 forums. This isn't the place for it.

I really don't know why you're obsessing over the example I gave but it needs to stop. If you aren't going to contribute anything of worth then I'd prefer if you stopped spamming.

Thank you.

I'll say it again, I don't care about your views on HD or whatever. Your obsession over this shows you missed the point entirely. Be helpful or stop harassing me.

You win the prize.
The #1 Ignorant AHole ever seen in this forum.

And then you ask for help . . . not likely now.

Wadda moron. Please go away.
