Slide Sync + Slide Scroller

Does anyone have the code to run Slide Sync combined with Slide Scroller on an ipad using HTML5?

Thanks

Reply

These plugins are Flash only plugins, so they will not work on iOS.

Reply

Ethan,

Are there a quick ways to convert Longtail Flash Plugins to HTML5 plugins? Or any plan to help all plugin developers.

With the penetration of various tablets, HTML5 based implementation is becoming very important.

Thanks
Prashant

Reply

Prashant,

These will need to be converted to JS/HTML5 by the actual developers. Some of our plugins are already in HTML5 mode, though. For example Flow is now HTML5 supported.

Thanks,

too bad it is not HTML5 yet....and also will be nice to have Flow mixed with slide sync+scroller...right now it is impossible with flow 2, only with flow 1.5...but I guess that is because of HTML5&flash incompatibility.

Reply

Yes, unfortunately this plugin is only Flash.

Hi Ethan, I have bought "Flow" to have a list of videos in iOS, but it does not work. Estoy usando vuestro fantástico servidor de vídeos Bits on the run. Reproducing the videos in a PC "Flow" it works perfectly.

A greeting and thanks,

David

Reply

Can you provide a link to where it isn't working?

Reply
Reply

Ah this is because Bits on the Run does not yet use the JW Embedder, which is needed for HTML5 plugins to work.

Reply

Then, As it is possible to be obtained? It is that I buy Flow for iOS indeed.

Reply

BOTR will add the embedder next year. If you want iOS support for Flow for now you have to use the stand alone JW Player.

Hello Ethan,

Long time since I consulted your wise ways.

Is there any news on the horizon regarding the ability to have the video on the right and slides on the left when slide sync and slide scroller are both in use.

I would really enjoy such an enhancement. I use JW for all my projects and lately, all of the footage I have has the speaker looking to their right (player left) at the slides they are presenting. And frankly, it just looks way wrong.

Anything you may know is more than I do!

Thanks a gazillion,

Evan

Hi Evan,

These plugins have not been updated since they were released, so I can't say for sure :S sorry.

hello Ethan,

I am curious about something ... I was thinking of using flow in the stead of the slide scroller.

And excuse me for being a bit of a wet behind the ears fella, but can I have items in my playlist jump to specific spots (as the slide sorter would) within the current file playing rather than a load of a new file altogether? I think that should solve the problem if that indeed works.

Thoughts?

E

Reply

No, unfortunately, not possible, if I understand you correctly.

Reply

so when a choice is made from a playlist it is always a pointer to the start of a file - never to a spot within the file?

E

Reply

If you are using streaming, you can use the "start" variable to start at a specific section of any file.

Reply

as a matter of fact, I am using RTMP. I tried using a start tag in my flow.xml file - but that didn't seem to do anything. I assume I am missing something obvious?

E

Reply

Do you have a link? I can't tell why it isn't working without seeing that

Reply

Sorry for the the big gap - The holidays seemed to get the best of me ... but here we go:

http://www.cancereducation.com/lrftestnewnav/index2newslidenav.html

this is a test of flow working with slidesync ... I only have the 2nd slide set with a "start" tag ... I just want to know how to make a slide choice in flow jump to a point NOT the beginning of a file.

Thanks a ton ETHAN!!!!

Reply

You can't jump to specific sections in videos here, as you are only using progressive download here, and you need to use streaming in order to start videos at other times other than 0.

Reply

I thought I was RTMP streaming - sheesh I am dumb ... for the sake of being transparent ... what attribute or what is the tip off?

Reply

Looking in the XML file, I can see that the files are all full http:// links to FLV files.

Reply

not the second one ... that is my test. Do they ALL have to be RTMP?

Reply

Yes. You are linking to a file and a playlist file in the same code here...so the playlist file is over-writing the file entry.

Reply

ok - now they should be streaming ... but they aren't using the start tag. Is this something easy?

Reply

Yes, you just need to add the start variable to each of your playlist entries.

You can do this with the JW Player namespace - http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player/jw-player-for-flash-v5/12537/xml-playlist-support#jwp...

Reply

Ethan - you are a lifesaver!!! IT WORKS GREAT!!!

Now I have two small additional questions:

How do (or can) I change the icon for the flow icon - or at least remove the word "flow"

When flow is enabled - my play/pause button doesn't work. Is it easy to get this enabled again?

Reply

Np! Unfortunately, you can't change that, or you can set the dock to false. Regarding that issue, can you show me?

Reply
Reply

Delete this line - so.addVariable('flow.onpaused', 'show');

Reply

then how will I get the flow to trigger? Has to be dock or control bar then?

Reply

And it still doesn't work - even with that removed ... hmmmm ... i even went back to the default skin

tricky

Reply

You are setting flow.onpause to show, so that is why play / pause does nothing. The skin has nothing to do with this.

Reply

Ethan,

I actually removed that setting last week. But the behavior is the same. Play pause is still inactive.

E

Reply

Um, I just clicked play/pause, and it played and paused fine...

Reply

on the control bar?

none of my three machines are experiencing that

Reply

Ah, got it, I was clicking on the actual player display area. You should make the player's width wider. All of the controls are being smushed together and none of the controls actually are clickable because of it I think.

Reply

nope - when I had the other skin ... beedlen ... no smush. I will revert back.

check it!

Reply

once I enable flow, for some reason I can't get play/pause to work

Reply

okay

I am beginning to feel that this may be a conflict with the slide sync and the flow plug - when I remove slidesync ... all works well.

trying yet another workaround unless you have some insight

Reply

hmm.. how about trying to set the controlbar variable to over ?

Reply

ok ok ok - this works now. I guess since I can't customize the flow dock icon ... the last stumbling block I have is:

I can get the flow Icon to add very easily to the default controlbar (duh)

but when I have a custom skin - it doesn't show

Is there something very obvious that I am missing?

Thanks for putting up with idiots!

E

Reply

If you set the dock variable to false, the flow icon shows up in the controlbar.

Reply

Ethan,

All is great with all your help!!! Thanks a million!!!

Is there any reason that my cursor will intermittently hide when over my vid window? Is there a function to turn this off? Does it have to do with the SWFObject?

Thanks,

E

Reply

Np! Hmm, that I am not sure of. Does it happen in a specific browser?

Reply

Do you experience it?

When mousing over the vid when the flow browser is open? Or toggling?

http://www.cancereducation.com/lrftestnewnav/index5newslidenav.html

I noticed this on your site - curious if it relates:

http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/feature-suggestions/22728/make-the-cursor-disa...

Reply

Ethan,

I think it might have been the "control bar = over" nonsense causing some kind of cursor disappearance

Reply

I don't notice it, at least in Firefox.

Why are you using 5.2 though? That is pretty outdated. We are at 5.8 now - http://www.longtailvideo.com/order/view/

Reply

hello Ethan,

I hope that my issue is an easy one this time.

I have a program that works fine when streaming from my own FMS.

http://www.cancereducation.com/cancersyspagesnb/a/mmrf/mm1103a_new/pres1.html

I am now attempting to use a CDN instead of my own FMS. The issue that I am seeing is strange. If I choose to play the video in a jwplayer without any plug-in (slide sync) it works great.

http://www.cancereducation.com/cancersyspagesnb/a/mmrf/mm1103a_new/pres1cdn2.html

If I then re-introduce the slide-sync ... the video just buffers forever and never plays.

http://www.cancereducation.com/cancersyspagesnb/a/mmrf/mm1103a_new/pres1cdn1.html

the code for all three is virtually identical.

the first is from my own FMS with slide - the third is exactly the same except pointing to the cdn. the one without the slide is identical to the third one - just with no plug variable.

What would make this happen, am i missing something silly?

Thanks so much for your continued help!

Evan

ack link is wrong on the 3rd example ... sorry ... it is

Reply

Weird that adding the plugin would do this.

That being said, you are using 5.2, and we are on 5.9 now, can you upgrade?

http://www.longtailvideo.com/order/view

Reply

ok - I got the new files.

I am baffled at how to config this. Thus why I lived comfortably in the past. None of my code seems to work at all with the new updates.

So to answer your question ... yes, I can upgrade - but that doesn't mean I know how to get anything to work.

what is the go to documentation for basic config?

E

Reply

hey Ethan,

I got the whole shebang config'd last nite - all seems to be shmoove.

Except ...

My flow plugin which I use to jump to different discrete spots within one video doesn't seem to be responding to my <jwplayer:start> tag within the xml file.

Could upgrading made this go wonky?

Here is an example of my new player with slides and flow - but with flow all broked up!

http://www.aoic.net/arthritisclone/goldberger.html

The XML is identical to the file that worked great before I upgraded. The only difference is that my files are now pointing to a CDN instead of my own FMS.

Your help is always a warm breeze!!!

Reply

fixed it!!!

Thanks man!!!

Reply

Np!

Reply

oh geez!!!

Another swell issue

now that flow works - my video upon first arrival will play at the wrong aspect ... then after using flow will fix itself and work correctly. Is there any reason that this would happen?

Reply

this link

all the vids to the left do the same - actually ... sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't.

Friggin ghosts!!!

Reply
Reply

I am not sure what you mean, the videos look fine to me here.

Reply

Ethan,

here is the link of my now live program

http://www.aoic.net/arthritis/goldberger.html

If you were to click on any of the links to the left, you will see that the vid will size itself to fill the space that the flow jpg occupied will the buffer completes. If you then choose to use the flow button from the ctrl bar - and jump ahead ... OR ... simply use the seek bar, you will see the vid resize itself to its actual size - not a stretched version.

This is making me tear my hair out - this problem did not exist when I streamed from my own FMS and when I was using an earlier version of JW.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand what the issue is here. I have been clicking the links and I can't replicate this behavor. Everything is working wonderfully for me.

Reply

ok

it works great for me MOST of the time. But if I were to do something like clear cache or shut down, it rears its head again.

the aspect of the videos are 16:9 - it fits flush to the sides of the long space on the right.

When a video is chosen - you will see a slide jpg from flow underneath the buffering pinwheel. This slide is 4:3. If this is the first time that you load this video (which may be the issue ... because you have loaded all these videos prior), the 16:9 video will vertically stretch to 4:3.

Upon:

reloading
using flow
scrubbing

the vid returns to its appropriate aspect and all is well.

I would like this to not happen - removing flow fixes it. Putting it on my FMS fixes it. Yet I don't want to do either of those things.

But what the heck?

E

Reply

the 6th video seems to give me the most fits

but they all do it (except the 5th) hmmmmmm?

Reply

Again, I have tried this, and I can't replicate.

The answer - I don't know.

I will put up a screencast if you don't believe me.

Reply

I certainly believe you

I am saddened that this doesn't have a clear solution.

Thanks for trying - I will see if I can shake some fruit from the tree

I just updated the html pages for this ... it is happening again - can you take one more peek?

Reply

What did you change? It is still working fine for me.

The only issue on your page that I see is that this file can't be found - http://www.aoic.net/arthritis/styles.css

Reply

i simply changed the player to now use oncomplete to advance to the next vid.

wow - this is a baffler. Everyone on my team is seeing this.

bear in mind ... it is subtle - actually the client hasn't even made notice of it as of yet. But I would like to know how to address it when it hits my inbox.

it doesn't error - it works very functionally. But the aspecting is off slightly and occasionally. Hmmmm - I don't think sending you a screen shot will help will it?

E

Reply

Maybe something with the stretching. I honestly have zero idea at this point.

Hey Ethan,

I just wanted to tell you that I have resolved the issue. I wanted to share my findings with you as an FYI.

When the flow plugin is used, 99.9999% of the time, a jpg of the vid is the thumbnail. This jpg would have the same aspect as the video it was captured from.

But in the case of my situation:

I am using 4:3 slide thumbs and I have 16:9 video. The player with flow in use will pop thumb 1 in the player window during buffer. Flow is primarily designed as a vid chooser / playlist navigator. So the #1 item on the playlist thumb will show, which would stand to reason that it would be the video about to play.

SO ...

In my playlist file ... the file for my <jwplayer:file> tag ... DID NOT have an "flv" extension ... and I was getting a re-aspecting of my video to the dimensions of the thumbnail placeholder. Upon inserting the extension ... fixed and done!!!

Great, glad you got it working, thanks for letting me know!

Ethan,

How are you mr. wise wizard?

I was wondering about two things.

1 - If you are to use the captions plug AND the slide sync ... would the captions appear over the entire scope of the player (slides and vid area) ... or would they appear just in the video portion? I thought I was to test this myself but ...

2 - I am having a dickens of a time getting captions to work with my sample file

http://aoic.net/arthritis/caption.html

I have the SRT files i place but they don't seem to be able to be seen by the player.

Thanks a bunch,
Evan

Reply

1) I have not used these two plugins together, but I am pretty certain that the Captions only cover the video player space.

2) http://www.aoic.net/arthritis/eng.srt = 404 not found.

Reply

I have experienced the same thing

but I SWEAR I AM LOOKING AT IT IN THE DIRECTORY!!!

is it a file handling thing perhaps?

Reply

Firebug says - "Content-Type text/html"

This means your webserver isn't configured to read the file properly (MIME-TYPE). Ask your host to set up the SRT MIME-TYPE for you.

Reply

I just did that actually before you posted

but I think I have to bounce IIS before rocking can commence. And that might be a late nite slow jam.

Thanks for helping me find my way home
