Feedback needed: skins/plugins/extensions website

14 replies [Last post]

Hi guys,

As you might have read left and right on the forum, we are busy building a sort-of repository site for developers of skins and plugins for the JW Player, plus third-party CMS tools. Users of the player can download skins, plugins and cms modules there, and everybody can submit their own. That way we hope to give you developers more exposure and possibly make money or find freelance gigs. Here are two first mockups. Please let us know what you think; what needs to be added, what is not important, etcetera...

http://qa.longtailvideo.com/addonsmockups/2.ProductPage-Plugin-Vidistro.jpg

This 'addons' database will reside on LongTailVideo.com. While it is being extended, we'll also move the player-related content from my website to LongTailVideo: the player pages, the forum, the order page and the wizard. That way, we have a site that's completely centered around the player and my website becomes more my personal portfolio again. This transition will probably be over the course of a few months, nothing in a hurry.

The separate Wiki (http://code.longtailvideo.com) will remain active as a separate site. www.longtailvideo.com will be the place where users of the JW Player can download the player and all kinds of addons, and code.longtailvideo.com will be the place where developers can find API information, code + documentation etcetera.

If you have any suggestions of what should be added where, please let us know! Your input is very important to us, since we're trying to give you guys the best possible tools to share and profit from your code and help.

The items that are clearly lacking on my site (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?thread=4821), will also be taken along.

Thanks for your input!

I think this all looks great!

A few suggestions:

1. There needs to be more explanation as to how some of the pieces inside of the player skin work. Such as a breakdown of the layers within the volumeSlider, timeSlider, and playlist. We need a little more then just http://code.jeroenwijering.com/trac/wiki/FlashSkinning. Things such as the minimum length for the timeSlider ect.

2. I think some images showing relationships between the pieces within the skin may be helpful as well. Maybe even a screencast.

Thank you for this amazing player!!!

Looks great and fresh.
Don't forget the preview button for the skins. So not only thumb's but also a preview button would be great.

My idea, keep it simple :)
One more thing. If there are added more skins or the one already there, I know you can download the fla but I think also the font's which are used should be in the download packages.

Hi, I'd like to suggest to make easy the steps which allow everyone to add the html code into the blog source for anyone who didn't study languages of programmation.

It's hard for me to add this code into my blog source.

It'should be nice only one short string to put in our blog source instead 3 long in three different position and page.

What do you think?

I hope so that I have been clear in my explanation.
Thank u and Bye

Hai,

Please provide the code to upload the video files using JavaScript.

I agree with Adam. More info and possibly a video tutorial on how to make a skin either from scratch or based off the default skin. More users will eventually flourish with this info and the skin's will pile up giving users a bigger selection to choose from. Get this done now so when the migration is done, you will have many news skins that can be uploaded!
You provide a great player and I appreciate your hard work and dedication!

Hi all, this is Adam from LongTail Video.

If anyone is interested in developing a plugin for our beta launch, please contact me directly at adam [a] long tail video [dot] com. You could even make some $$$ :)

Thanks.

I would add support for YuMe and Tremor Media. They both have APIs so that a flash player can make the necessary ping backs. This allows playing ads from them as well. I know it would compete with LongTail, but the more options the better for the end user/developer/website owner.

Hi, I'm using your wonderful product with great satisfaction.

I have been developing a Joomla website and have been integrating the AllVideos Plugin by Fritz which uses your player as it's foundation.

I am not sure which version is currently at play with the latest of this component, however I have been trying to figure out if there's any way to add css styling (pipe shaped image for example) to a playlist style setup.

One logical application would be with the lists containing "title", "description" and link button.
I just noticed in your wizard that there is now what appears to be a offset in the color of the lists creating a shadow effect.

Is this a function of the new version or can I create the effect with the vars and or css styling.

Fritz who has been quite helpful in the past has suddenly become absent (might still be on vacation).

Thanks!

Hi,

I would like the code used to insert an JW Player object to be regular expression equivalent. This means that there is no chance for hijacker to inject malicious code during a post.

I have your player in one of my websites, in which users are able to insert videos in articles. I want to check their input to neglect any script tags except tags of the player, and this will not achieved without standard regular expression for the JW code used to integrate it in the web page.

Said Bakr

@Dan -- would love your help. Please email me directly @ adam [a] long tail video [dot] com.

Just a few comments:
I think both pages look a bit cluttered and unbalanced. Also, I think they are a bit overdesigned, and less "clean" than the other pages of the longtail website. In general, it looks like no real choice has been made which part of the page needs to get the immediate focus. There are too many components that are a bit too heavy: the gray "browsing: all add-0ns"-bar, the thick tops and bottoms of the "browse", "most recent" and "popular" menus and the gray category boxes.

on the add-ons-index page:
The introductory text would be more appropriate just below the heading "Add-Ons". I would also add the links "How do I make an Add-On" and "submit an Add-On" at the end of the introductory text, or maybe dedicate a small piece of text to encourage people to submit their own plugins.
When you highlight the "All Add-ons" item in the browse-menu, the bar "Browsing: All Add-ons" would no longer be necessary.
In the boxes for each plugin or addon, the "Get This" button should be more distinguishable. Also, I think this button would better swap places with the "learn more" link. I think I would put cluster the information about category and popularity, and indicate the popularity for every plugin and add-on, both by user-rating and by number of downloads.

on the product page:
I think the popularity would be more obvious using a star rating. You could consider to give a longtail-rating as well as a user rating (as seen for example at download.com). Now all page elements (description, donate, submit bug) are boxed seperatedly. this does interrupt the page flow.

Hope to help.

@Adam, @Pete: we're working on a more detailed breakdown and more info on the skinning. There's already a tutorial and more info will be there soon too:

http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Skinning_the_JW_Player

@Dan G: we have plugins for both by now!

@Bruce: CSS styling isn't possible yet, but it is a good idea. Will check!

@Said Bakr: can you elaborate a little?

@juaron: totally agree. They're too cluttered and we will indeed bring them more in line with the other pages. I'lll keep your other comments too for the redesign. Thanks a lot!

thanks
