Is there an example script somewhere showing how to use the javascript api's addbutton command to add a button to the control bar?

You had me scared there for a moment!
I thought I'd missed something really useful.
addButton() is for plugins — ActionScript not JavaScript.

It looks like I misread the docs. Thanks for pointing this out.
I want to add a buffering animation for an audio-only playlist application (the controlbar and playlist are the only part of the player that are visible) and would love a buffering animation to appear in the controlbar between the time that someone presses play and when playback starts.
Is writing a plug-in in Flash the only practical way to do that?

Unless you're already proficient in Flash or want to become proficient in Flash, I would recommend positioning an animated GIF with the JS API and CSS.
There's a fairly steep learning curve for the plugins even if you start with the examples that Longtail Video has so generously provided for us.
I'm working on about 15 of them, mostly started as mods from the LTV code, and it isn't so easy for somenone new to Flash.
