Question about .flv and bandwidth usage

I know this may sound a bit "noob" but I'm new to .flv files.

Normally, say with a .wmv file, all the bandwidth is taken from that video. So if a .wmv file is 40mb and is directly embedded onto a site, each time someone plays the video, it's taking up 40mb of bandwidth for each person playing the video.

With .flv and the JW media player, is that the same? If I have a 40mb .flv file and stream it with the JW player on a site, will it eat up 40mb of bandwidth each time?

It's actually traffic, not bandwidth.

The answer is yes, each complete download of the file, viewed or not, will add 40MB to your total traffic.

So why do people say flash files save more on traffic/bandwidth...or is it just because you can compress it smaller and keep a decent quality in flash?

yes they compress it to a smaller file

40mb wmv get compressed in mayby 25mb
